Some fun facts about me and my herd!

  • Most popular Giraffe name: Gerry. Ours is called MAX – MAX speed; MAX reliability; MAX value.
  • Famous Hollywood actor: Melman the Giraffe from Madagascar (who talks just like David Schwimmer from Friends!)
  • Height: 5-6m which makes us the world’s tallest animal – positively head and shoulders above the rest.
  • Average weight of 1,600kg – that’s a lot of kgs – just like our heavy weight data bundles.
  • Local giraffe celebrity: our very own MAX who lives at Mukuvisi woodlands
  • Adult giraffes - have strong social bonds, often gathering in  loose aggregations if they happen to be moving in the same general direction
  • Black tongues – too much licorice!
  • Each coat’s markings are unique – just like a human fingerprint!
  • Live up to 25 years – we hope to be around for a lot longer!
  • Ancient romans called giraffes cameleopards because they looked like hybrid animals!
  • Baby giraffes are 6 feet tall – taller than a human! Grow an inch a day!
  • Giraffes rarely lay down; they even sleep and give birth standing up.
  • Height and excellent eyesight enable giraffes to keep an eye on each other from far away. A dozen may be dispersed over 1/2 mile (0.8 km) of savannah and still be considered to be in a herd.
  • You would have to run in order to keep up with a giraffe walking because every step a giraffe takes is 15 feet long.
  • Mankind has historically honoured giraffes. Giraffes feature in African cave paintings and in ancient Egyptian art and designs.
  • A giraffe usually sleeps for only 1 - 12 minutes - just like our call centre, we’re there to support you 24/7!
